It all started with that 15 years ago, perfumer Maurice Roussel came to him with the words: “I have been making the best frederic malle fragrances for two years, but no one needed it. If you’re interested, you can release it and earn something.” Mall did just that – released and earned. It was the Musc Ravageur. All world concerns – Christian Dior, Estee Lauder, Chanel – started with three employees and a ten-meter room.
Frédéric Malle, the brand’s creator, is the first perfume producer who guessed to put the names of the perfumers who created them on the bottles. Frederic’s grandfather, Serge Efleur-Luis, is a legend in the fragrance world.
At first, he was the right hand of François Coty, and in 1948, as the best friend of Christian Dior, he created Parfums Christian Dior and released Miss Dior. Frederic’s mother, Marie-Christine Wittgenstein, continued her father’s work and, for half a century, determined the policy of Parfums Christian Dior founded by him. His father was friends with the great Jacques Helle, the art director of Chanel. Frederic’s uncle, Louis Malle, is a director.
In his youth, Frederic spent much time among ambitious amateur advertising people. And he was so imbued with hostility towards them that, having got into the environment of modest, intelligent, and talented perfumers, he was delighted. Therefore, the first thing he did when he founded his perfume publishing house was to print their names on bottles and hang their portraits in a boutique on Rue de Grenelle.
