10 Best Fougere Fragrances Of All Time

10 Best Fougere Fragrances Of All Time

This article will focus on one of the groups in the perfume classification, namely Fougere fragrances for men and women. Translated from the Gaulish language, le fougère is a fern. The history of a whole block of perfume compositions is based on a cunning trick. After all, the fern, as you know, has no smell.

The Best Fougere fragrances are a class that includes compositions obtained by combining primarily woody notes interspersed with thick scents of oakmoss, coumarin, often lavender, and bergamot.

Such unconventional combinations of ingredients charge the fougere aroma with heady dope, some nebula, vegetable greenery, and herbaceousness, guaranteed to ensure the interest of the stronger sex in such compositions. Fougeres are just one of many classes of fragrances for ladies. If you like Fougere perfume notes, you may like the smell of colognes below.

About Fougere Perfumes

In 1882, the variety of perfumery was rich in repetitions, as they bought what was imported into the country: citrus oil, lavender, rose, verbena, moss, geranium, and patchouli. Talented perfumer and co-owner of the Houbigant Parfum perfume house (Ubigan Perfume) Paul Park, inspired by the nature of royal forests with wet mossy tree trunks overgrown with ferns, decides to use a synthetic analog of Tonka Beans in perfumes and gets an amazing aroma that is ahead of its time. Paul is barely 26 when he introduces the Parisian nobility to a novelty unique for those times – the perfume Fougère Royale (“Royal Fern”).

For the first time, Paul Parke puts a synthetic material based on a perfume composition. At that time, chemical synthesis products were not widely used in industry, so the ambitious Frenchman’s decision brought him fame and secured a place in history.

Paul Parke discovered this by adding coumarin, an analog of tonka beans obtained synthetically, to the perfume pyramid. Its delicate spicy smell has singled out the perfume among dozens of analogs.

“Royal Fern” was announced as a fragrance created through the union of perfume art and botany. Notes of lavender, sage, lime, rose, moss, and tonka bean combined to simultaneously give a “wet”, slightly spicy, bitter, and fresh scent. Thus, with his subtle flair and impeccable taste, Parke laid the foundation for a new perfume genre – Wine glasses.

“The Russian Emperor Alexander III appreciated Fougere Royal”. The popularity of the cologne created competition among perfume houses – this is how the fougere fragrant group appeared. In 2010, the fragrance was re-released and still has fans. US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and actress Brigitte Bardot favored Fougere Royal. Guy de Maupassant and Marie Antoinette were admirers of fougere cologne.

In modern perfumery, Fougere refers mainly to unisex fragrances. There are several varieties of Fougere perfumes for men, depending on the dominant note:
